Top 10 tips for producing a better CV

Precise and Concise – Keep your CV simple. Choose the right structure and highlight the most important information such as your key skills and experience near the top. Unless asked otherwise, you should usually include the following sections; Profile, Achievements, Experience, Personal Skills (languages/computers), Education, Training, Interests and References. You should always try to keep your CV to a maximum of two pages.

References – Check with referees before you use their names and make sure that you still have their current and correct contact details. Always try to provide references from your current and previous places of employment.

Education – give significant attention to your educational and personal achievements from your previous university, school or college if you haven’t been in the job market for over two years. Things like captain of a school team, chair person of the debating society or organized a school charity event. This shows your motivational and leadership qualities as well as showing you have initiative.

Start with your current or most recent employment and work backwards including the name of your employer, start and end dates, your roles and responsibilities and your achievements. If it’s your first job, list any other relevant experience you have first either paid or unpaid. Do the same for your educational history.

Emphasise your achievements, keys skills, qualifications and quality attributes. Employers will often have a check list for these things and more commonly, it is these keywords that will be used as search criteria when using the internet and jobsites to search for potential candidates.

Never tell lies on your CV. Its wasting both your time and theirs and it will always backfire on you in one way or another.

Take the time to check your CV over and over again. Look for spelling and grammar mistakes. Don’t just rely on your spell checker, get as many people as you can to read over and check your CV. If you don’t and it’s full of mistakes, it will just go straight in the bin.

You must always send a covering letter to accompany your CV unless you are told otherwise. Highlight your main skills, education, quality attributes and their relevancy to the job.

Overcrowding your CV is a real turn off to employers. Bullet points are a great way of delivering information in a very precise and concise manner. Your CV needs to be clear and easily read. Don’t make the mistake of including too much information.

Understand what your employer is looking for and tailor make your CV to match the necessary skills and qualifications required for the job.
